Source of funds and source of wealth checks explained

Source of funds asks where money for a transaction came from. Source of wealth asks how a person acquired their overall assets. This guide helps you identify the request, verify a secure submission route and keep a factual record without sending sensitive documents to us.

The short answer

Ask what is being checked before supplying evidence

Record the operator's exact request, purpose, period and evidence list. Confirm the upload route through the signed-in account or independently verified official support. Ask what can be redacted and whether a less intrusive document is acceptable. Never send bank statements, payslips, identity documents or account numbers to this website.

TermWhat it concernsQuestion to clarify
Source of fundsWhere the money financing a particular transaction or account activity came from.Which transaction, deposit, period or payment method is the operator examining?
Source of wealthThe origin of the person's overall body of wealth and how it was acquired. Why is an overall-wealth assessment considered necessary and what period is relevant?
Identity or payment ownershipWho the customer is or who owns the payment method. Is this actually a separate identity, address or third-party-payment check?
Customer interactionWhether gambling activity may indicate financial difficulty or harm.Is the request being made for safer-gambling assessment rather than an AML purpose?

The UK Gambling Commission glossary defines source of funds as where money financing the transaction comes from and source of wealth as the origin and acquisition of the person's total assets. The terms are related, but one does not automatically answer the other.

Why a gambling business may ask about finances

A UKGC-licensed business may make checks for more than one reason. These can include anti-money laundering duties, payment ownership, identity verification and customer interaction where spending may indicate financial harm. The operator should identify the purpose as clearly as the law permits rather than relying on a vague statement that a check is simply required by regulation.

Do not treat this as a universal trigger list: operators use risk-based processes and the evidence needed depends on the actual request. This page does not provide thresholds, evasion advice or a method for restructuring payments to avoid review.

Separate UKGC requirements from offshore terms

The UKGC material cited here governs or explains expectations for businesses within its remit. It must not be presented as a protection automatically supplied by an overseas operator. An offshore business may use similar language under different law, licensing rules or internal policy, and the available complaint or data-rights route may differ.

Verify the operator, contracting company, licensed domain and applicable terms before relying on a regulator's guidance. The casino licence checklist explains how to confirm that relationship. This financial-check guide deliberately does not return someone managing an active review to casino selection.

Evidence categories are examples, not a universal checklist

CategoryPossible purposeSafety question
Bank or payment recordTransaction origin, account ownership or activity over a stated period. Can unrelated transactions and full account numbers be redacted?
Income recordEvidence of a stated income source or recurring funds.Which dates and fields are necessary for the stated purpose?
Asset or sale recordEvidence for a stated source of wealth or one-off funding event.Would a summary, relevant page or alternative document be accepted?
Payment-method evidenceConfirmation that the method belongs to the customer. Is the request confined to the method actually used?
Identity or address recordSeparate identity or location verification. Why is it being requested now and was it reasonably available earlier?

Do not fabricate, edit or conceal relevant evidence. Asking whether unnecessary fields can be redacted is different from altering the substance of a document. If the request is unclear, ask for its purpose and scope in writing before sending more information.

Verify the channel before sending sensitive information

  1. Open the official route independently. Use the signed-in account or a support address confirmed on the operator's official domain.
  2. Check the request reference. Match the message, account notification and requested evidence.
  3. Ask about minimisation. Confirm the necessary period, fields and acceptable redactions or alternatives.
  4. Check delivery protection. Prefer the operator's authenticated upload route over replying to an unexpected message.
  5. Retain a safe receipt. Record the date, acknowledgement and reference without copying document contents into an insecure note.
  6. Report suspicious contact. Do not open unverified upload links or send files to a newly introduced address.
This site does not collect financial evidence: never paste or upload bank statements, payslips, tax records, identity documents, account numbers or document images here.

A withdrawal request should not create avoidable verification friction

UKGC identity rules say a withdrawal must not trigger an additional-information condition where the licensee could reasonably have requested that information earlier. This does not prevent information being sought when another legal obligation arises at that time. The Commission also says source checks should be necessary and proportionate to risk and should not be used to accept deposits indefinitely and then frustrate a withdrawal.

These statements do not guarantee payment, decide a dispute or remove legitimate checks. Record when the request arose, what deposits were previously accepted, what explanation was given and which balance remains restricted. The withdrawal and KYC guide separates operator review, release and payment delivery, while the staged-payment guide helps reconcile any balance left with the operator.

Ask focused questions and use the correct complaint route

  1. What is the purpose? Ask whether the request concerns SOF, SOW, identity, payment ownership or another review.
  2. What is the minimum scope? Ask which period, transaction and fields are necessary.
  3. Why now? Ask what changed and whether the information could reasonably have been requested earlier.
  4. What remains restricted? Separate account access, withdrawal review and payment delivery.
  5. What happens next? Ask for an acknowledgement, next action and written outcome without treating a timeframe as guaranteed.

If access is restricted or closed while money remains unresolved, use the account-closure and balance record to keep the account decision separate from each balance line.

Preserve the chronology with the casino complaint evidence pack, then use the complaints and disputes guide to identify the route that applies. A subject access request may help obtain personal information held about you, but it is not a shortcut to a payout or a substitute for the operator's complaint process.

Stop if the check exposes unaffordable or harmful spending

Do not deposit again, borrow money or continue gambling to try to satisfy a review or release funds. If the evidence request shows that gambling is affecting bills, debt, savings or mental health, use the promotion-free routes in the safer-gambling support area. The lower-risk next step is to stop gambling and seek confidential financial or gambling-harm support.
