Bonus caps and balance evidence
How maximum cashout limits can reduce bonus winnings
A promotion can cap the amount converted from bonus play even after its wagering condition is met. This guide separates the balances, identifies the cap basis and checks fictional arithmetic without recommending a bonus or predicting a return.
The short answer
Apply the saved cap only to the balance named by the term
Record whether the cap is a fixed amount, a multiplier or another stated formula. Keep the deposit balance separate from bonus funds and bonus-derived restricted winnings. The smaller of the restricted balance and the applicable cap is the cap-limited result, but it is not necessarily available for immediate withdrawal.

Map the balances before calculating
Deposit balance
The reader's own deposited funds and, where the record supports it, winnings from play with those funds.
Bonus balance
The promotional amount credited under the offer and subject to its stated restrictions.
Restricted bonus-derived balance
The recorded balance produced through bonus play before any stated conversion or cashout cap is applied.
A single displayed total is not enough evidence. Save the separate balances and the transaction ledger at the same time. Do not assign a deposit-funded amount to a bonus cap merely because the operator's interface placed the funds in one total.
Identify the exact cap basis
- Fixed amount. Record the amount, currency and balance to which it applies.
- Bonus multiplier. Multiply the original bonus amount only when that is the basis named by the term.
- Deposit multiplier. Use the qualifying deposit only when the wording expressly names it.
- Lower-of rule. Calculate every stated candidate and use the lowest only when the term says to do so.
- Other formula. Do not translate unclear wording into a typical industry rule. Mark the result unresolved.

Three fictional cap calculations
Every amount below is invented and independently checked in integer pence. The arithmetic begins after an assumed restricted balance has been reconciled. It does not model play, likely winnings, expected value or a route for reaching the balance.

- Fixed cap: the smaller of fictional £86 and £50 is £50; adding the separate £12 deposit gives an arithmetic total of £62, with £36 above the cap.
- Bonus multiplier: four times a fictional £30 bonus is £120; the smaller of £175 and £120 is £120, with £55 above the cap.
- Lower-of rule: three times £40 is £120, which is lower than £200; the smaller of £260 and £120 is £120. Adding the separate £15 deposit gives £135, with £140 above the cap.
Record what the saved term says happens above the cap
Do not assume the excess is removed, forfeited, returned to a bonus balance or left in the account. Preserve the exact wording, the moment the operator applied it and the before-and-after ledger. If the term does not describe the treatment, mark it missing. This page does not decide whether a specific term is fair or enforceable.
Stop when a material input is missing or conflicts
- The promotion headline and full terms name different caps or bases.
- The cap does not identify the currency, qualifying amount or affected balance.
- The interface combines deposit and bonus funds into one unexplained total.
- The terms changed after acceptance or the earlier version cannot be retrieved.
- Support describes a formula that is absent from, or conflicts with, the saved terms.
- The calculation requires guessing whether the cap applies before or after conversion.
Create a cap evidence record

Hand a disputed cap into the existing complaint record

Keep UKGC protections within the licensed sector
The UK Gambling Commission says its licensees must display deposit and bonus balances separately and permit withdrawal of the deposit balance while a bonus is pending or active, except where necessary to meet general regulatory obligations. Its guidance also allows wagering requirements on bonus winnings while keeping deposit-derived winnings available under the licensed-sector rule.
The Competition and Markets Authority says online gambling firms should let customers leave promotions with the remaining deposit and winnings from play with that deposit. ASA and CAP guidance says significant promotion conditions must be clear and prominent where omission is likely to mislead. These sources do not establish the meaning, fairness or enforceability of a particular offshore term and must not be presented as protections automatically supplied by an offshore operator.
Choose less exposure when the cap is unclear
Do not deposit again, raise a stake, switch games or continue wagering to reach a cap. A high cap does not make a promotion safer or more likely to pay. If the actual terms allow a promotion to be declined or cancelled, compare that choice with accepting restricted funds. Stop if the restriction is unclear or uncomfortable, and use the safer-gambling support area if gambling is causing harm.
